LAPTF History

The Livonia Area Piano Teachers Forum (LAPTF) was founded in 1971, and had its first meeting in Marian Stickel’s basement studio with founding members Linda Wotring, Jean Candlish, Donna Borgert and Marian Stickels attending. These teachers were eager to collaborate, share ideas, and increase the effectiveness of their professional careers for themselves as well as piano teachers in the Southeastern Michigan area.  This goal was well stated by member Christine Otter, who said, “Put us in the world of Professionalism”.

Founded in 1971

In an effort to continue their individual growth and build their pedagogical skills, they reached out to Schoolcraft College Music Department, where a Pedagogy Certificate was designed and directed by Donald Morelock, who was committed to providing piano teachers with practical and professional teaching skills.  His Pedagogy Certificate program continues today.

Independent Michigan piano teachers with home studios can thank LAPTF’s past member, Betty Stasson, for her hard work in the 1980’s getting legislation passed, thereby permitting independent piano teachers to run home studios.

Over the years, the organization’s membership has grown from its first basement meeting to a flourishing organization that meets monthly September through May at Steinway Piano Gallery and Evola Music Centers.  LAPTF continues the founders’ vision by offering piano teachers camaraderie, monthly educational and informative programming, and many opportunities for their piano students, including the MMTA Student Achievement Testing.  LAPTF is a valuable organization that supports piano teachers, their studios and their students throughout Southeastern Michigan.
